Life Lessons from Laurren

Over the past year or so, I’ve been following the life and story of a spunky 13-year-old Texan named Laurren Smith who has been fighting a rare form of cancer for many months. Laurren and her parents post updates on her Caring Bridge blog regularly, so it’s easy to find out about specific prayer requests and other needs the family has.

There is also a Facebook group you can join to receive updates on Laurren and a website for the Laurren Smith Foundation, which was established recently to help provide financial support for Laurren’s family.

Throughout her fight, Laurren’s parents, family and friends have shared about how amazing Laurren’s attitude has been through multiple surgeries, chemotherapy and countless “pokes.” She is always smiling, rarely complains – her positive attitude is contagious.

I’ve realized lately that Laurren will come to my mind at times when I know my attitude is out of line. Just one thought of how she smiles while enduring things no teenager should have to, reminds me that my complaints are shallow and that my blessings are many. Also, her family’s faith and dedication to prayer are amazing and inspiring.


On Tuesday, a local news channel aired Laurren’s story, and I don’t think there was a dry eye in the newsroom or in our family room. NBCDFW has also posted a written version of Laurren’s story here http://www.nbcdfw.com/news/health/I-prayed-for-God-to-give-me-a-positive-attitude-59638407.html.

Laurren is now receiving alternative cancer treatment and still needs prayer and financial support. I hope you’ll take a few minutes to read about Laurren and to visit one of her websites. She is on my heart on a daily basis – and I have a feeling she’ll be on yours, too.

Back in the Swing of Things!

Hello, loyal Chalkydoodles clients! We’ve taken a nice & long break from our Chalky blogging this summer and are now back in the swing of things.


Our summer was all about Target.com and it has been a true blessing and a whirlwind all at the same time! You can still purchase the Chalkydoodles Oilcloth Picnic Set on Target.com so go check it out.

I spent the morning talking with a local Dallas news magazine about Chalkydoodles – where it’s been and where it’s headed in the near future. Later today, I’ll conference with my website designer as we continue to build the new Chalkydoodles website. And, next week I’ll start training a new member of the Chalkydoodles team who will be helping with the website development and getting things ready for the holiday season, which is fast-approaching!
I’ll be posting again regularly on our blog all Fall, so stay tuned for more news about our website, new products and other exciting Chalky stuff!
